Once a Dragon, Always a Dragon
From returning as teachers to dental awards and art exhibitions, this term’s OD updates range from 1952 to 2021.
Iris Adams, Will Greaney, Kitty Hacking and Peter Parker (OD 2021)
We welcomed back these four young Old Dragons for some work experience this academic year. You can read more about Kitty and Peter’s experience in the upcoming issue of The OD magazine.
Andrew Rugg-Gunn (OD 1952)
Congratuations to Andrew who was awarded the International Association for Dental Research Gold Medal in 2023. This is the Association’s highest award.
“For the past 30+ years, Rugg-Gunn has had an advisory role with the World Health Organization (WHO). He served as an advisor regarding revisions of ‘Oral Health Surveys, Basic Methods’ (now in its 5th edition), and the revision of ‘Fluorides and Oral health’ (Technical Report, 1994), published in 2016. He also co-authored the WHO publication ‘Milk Fluoridation for the Prevention of Dental Caries’, (2009), and two WHO documents on early childhood caries. Additionally, he was part of a WHO team invited to Beijing in 2000 by the Chinese Ministry of Health to advise on national fluoride policy.”

Sebastian Volak (OD 2010)
Sebastian’s ‘Portrait of Isobel in Oil’ was selected to appear in the Oxford Art Society exhibition held at St John’s College, Oxford. We’re delighted to prominently feature one of his recent works in the upcoming issue of The OD.
Freddy Paske (OD 1999)
Freddy recently hosted an exhibition of wildlife art from Australia to Africa entitled SAFARI on Percy Street, London. Although the exhibition closed in November, you can view Freddy’s beautiful works online at freddypaske.com/safari.
“It is impossible for our eyes to act like a camera and translate every detail they see in an instant. It is up to our mind to fill the relevant gaps and construct what we see. As we grow older we become more familiar with our surroundings and unconsciously ‘see’ less.”
Alex Watson (OD 2006)
Congratulations to Alex Watson (OD 2006) on being elected to conduct this year’s Piliers of Chablis ceremony. 🍷
“The endorsement of this project, in this way, is undoubtedly one of the coolest moments of my life and a day I won’t be forgetting any time soon.”
Every year, the most senior winemakers and other representatives from the region, welcome a handful of new members into the the guild of winemakers in recognition of services to the region, safeguarding and promoting the interests of the winemakers. The mayor picks one member to conduct this ceremony in full view of the whole town during the annual wine festival.
“…one of the greatest surprises of my life, and proudest moments, is that the person for this year was me!”
Alex has received this recognition, off the back of his work with Renais Gin | B Corp™. Congratulations, Alex! Santé!
Max Hembrow (OD 2008)
It was wonderful to see Max Hembrow‘s (OD 2008) work celebrated at The Battersea Autumn AAF, London, last month.
His work combines elements of the classical European tradition and School of Paris Modernism established by Picasso, Braque, Cézanne and Matisse, with a particular interest in musical motifs and the treatment of the figure through forms of psychological analytical cubism.
Max lays down layers of paint and marks, working intuitively and strategically as a response to music. The works explore tensions between time, marks, colour, and composition.
Zander Cornish-Moore (OD 2007)
We were delighted to welcome Zander back to Bardwell Road to capture Skipper’s in all its glory this Autumn. Flying his drone over the Dragon grounds flooded in sunshine, Zander took beautiful images of our brand new Music and Performing Arts Centre, now known as Skipper’s.
Tom George (OD 2008)
It has been an incredible year for Tom, most recently taking silver in the men’s pairs at the Paris Olympics.
Tom Hiddleston (OD 1994)
We were delighted to welcome Tom back to Bardwell Road in September to open Skipper’s, our new Music and Performing Arts Centre.
Tom discovered his love for acting at the Dragon, and we tracked down this picture of him playing Richard Dauntless in Ruddigore. Tom’s speech is sure to have inspired a new generation of young Dragons to practise and play, and we’re excited to watch their talents unfold.
Tom Guthrie (OD 2012)
In July, Tom Guthrie endured the Arch2Arc challenge, each running seven marathons in seven days with four teammates. The challenge was in the name of Morgan MacRae, brother of teammate Iwan, a 21 year old semi-pro rugby player who suffered a cardiac arrest. After prolonged CPR from his girlfriend Kitty, seventeen minutes deceased, four defibrillations and three days in a coma; he made an incredible recovery and is back playing elite rugby less than a year later. Following his recovery, Morgan launched social media movement My SIC-D and Me that champions CPR training in the workplace, sports clubs etc… he just needed some enthusiastic fundraisers!
The challenge began beneath Marble Arch where the runners set off south covering 110km in their first two days before reaching Newhaven port, where an overnight ferry would arrive in Dieppe at 3am. Running continued at 3:30am on less than two hours sleep and continued for another 5 days before their arrival at the Arch de Triomphe.
The boys successfully raised over £28,000 for their heart-related charities, grossly exceeding their initial £5,000 target. They said “although we suffered two broken legs, seemingly infinite blisters and even the odd hangover, it was definitely worth it”.
