Happy Birthday Pre-Prep!

Apr 2, 2026

As we look ahead to celebrating 150 years of the Dragon in 2027, we’re also taking time to honour the milestones that have shaped our community along the way: from 130 years on Bardwell Road and 30 years of Girls’ Boarding to the 30th anniversary of the Pre-Prep, to name a few.

We look forward to welcoming so many of our community to our Pre-Prep birthday party this May. If you are no longer able to attend, please do let Imelia Taylor know so we can offer your place to another family. We can’t wait to celebrate 30 years with you all!

Home to the youngest of Dragons

When Roger Trafford became Head of the Dragon in 1993, he brought with him a vision: to enable younger children to experience the unique spirit of the School. The opportunity arrived sooner than expected. In 1994, the Crescent School announced its closure, and as word spread, parents began expressing their hope that the Dragon might extend its provision to its youngest Dragons yet.

Just months later, the Dragon submitted a bid for the property. The news was revealed in unforgettable fashion during the Junior Christmas Party of 1994, Roger stepped to the back of Lynam Hall and announced that the bid had been successful.

The first year

By autumn 1995, the first cohort of the littlest Dragons arrived at what was then known as Lynams. They cycled down Richards Lane, gathered for circle time, wrote their first letters, and read their first books together. Their days were filled with discovery: visiting farms, experimenting with parachutes, building Archimedes’ screws, singing in the music room, and creating artwork to brighten their Form rooms.

To mark the official opening, the children planted a chestnut tree on Friday 13 October 1995 and welcomed special guests, including Barbara Lynam, who cut a dragon‑shaped cake in their honour.

Memories that shaped a community

The early years of Lynams were filled with moments that have become part of Dragon folklore. Pre‑Prep Head Iona Smith (1999–2004) often spoke of the excitement of the Millennium celebrations, when Year 3 travelled to the Millennium Dome while Lynams created their own “Dome at Home.” One child summed up the day perfectly: “At home time I wish I didn’t have to leave.”

Jennifer Wilson, the first Pre‑Prep Head (1995–1999), captured the spirit of that inaugural year in The Draconian, writing: “There are not enough ways of saying thank you in English when it needs to be a big one… Thank you for the first year of great fun and promise at Lynams. We look forward to the next.”

In 2005, Lynams celebrated its 10th anniversary with a day of reflection and joy. Former Heads Jennifer Wilson and Iona Smith joined Roger Trafford, governors, and colleagues for an assembly filled with songs and shared memories. The celebrations continued with circus fun for older children, a puppet workshop for younger ones, and the release of ten balloons, each carrying a child’s handwritten name.

The Pre-Prep today

If the School has grown since those early days, the essence of the Pre‑Prep remains unchanged. The brightly coloured buildings still offer a cheerful welcome as families arrive at Richard’s Lane. Ma McNeile continues to greet children with her familiar smile and wave as bikes are parked, parents are hugged, and the youngest Dragons race past the astro and playground toward their classrooms, Bun Break already on their minds.

This May, we look forward to celebrating 30 years of our youngest Dragons. And yes, we’re already in conversation with catering about a suitably magnificent dragon‑shaped cake.

Registration for our Pre-Prep birthday party is now closed, and we are delighted to have so many of our community coming to join in with the celebrations. If you are no longer able to attend, please do let Imelia Taylor know so we can offer your place to another family.

We can’t wait to celebrate 30 years with you all!

In 1886, it was parents’ faith and financial support which enabled the fulfilment of an extraordinary vision – to found a school that would inspire and nurture each child’s unique gifts.

As part of these celebrations, we’re sharing the stories that define the School we know today. Arguably, one of the most transformative moments came when the Dragon opened its doors to its youngest fire-breathers for the very first time.

It was the year of 1995 …
