150 years
OF THE DRAGON
What comes to mind when you think of the spirit of the Dragon?
Throughout 2027, to mark the 150th anniversary of the School, we will be hosting celebratory events, sharing archival treasures, and spotlighting Old Dragons who embody the spirit of the School.
Alongside these many moments of celebration, we are proud to be publishing a commemorative book marking 150 years of the Dragon through essays, photographs and reflections. Bridging generations, from Lady Antonia Fraser CH, DBE, FRSL (OD 1944) to the young Dragons of 2027, our contributors span a rich tapestry of Dragon voices including teachers, Heads and Dragons past and present.
The book is now available to buy, offering the first opportunity to secure this special commemorative edition.
“It’s a celebration of the community.
It’s a celebration of what makes this School different.”
Emma Goldsmith, Head of the Dragon

FAQs
Is there a pre‑order period or limited print run?
The book will be produced as a limited‑edition release with only a small number held in School, so pre‑ordering ensures your copy is reserved. This approach allows us to minimise waste and reduce environmental impact.
When will the book be published, posted or available for collection?
The commemorative book will be published in January 2027, with copies posted or ready for collection from The Lodge, Bardwell Road, shortly thereafter.
What time period or milestone does the book celebrate?
The commemorative book marks the Dragon’s 150th anniversary, celebrating the School’s story from its founding in 1877 through to the present day. It reflects on a century and a half of Dragon life, capturing the moments, people, and spirit that have shaped the Dragon over 150 years.
Who contributed to writing, editing, and designing the book?
The commemorative book has been shaped through a collaborative effort across the Dragon community, with contributions from Old Dragons and former colleagues.
Writer Leila Johnston has authored the full volume, bringing together contributions, interviews, and 150 years of history into a cohesive and compelling narrative. Leila is an experienced writer who specialises in making complex ideas clear, engaging, and beautifully structured. Her work spans books, magazine writing and editing, brand storytelling, and research‑driven projects. (She is also the partner of an Old Dragon, giving her a unique perspective on the School and its enduring spirit!)
The editorial process has been supported by the Development Team, Old Dragons, and former colleagues.
The book’s design and production will be crafted in partnership with an Oxfordshire designer and printer, ensuring a thoughtfully made, locally produced, limited‑edition publication for the School’s 150th anniversary.
The book runs to approximately 132 pages.

Essays cover topics such as music and performance, sport, holiday diaries, and the Second World War, and recent Heads give their insight into how and why the School has flourished over the last four decades.
Can I submit my own photos or memories?

Any profits from sales of the book will support the Dragon’s Transformational Bursary Programme, helping to provide life‑changing opportunities for children who would otherwise be unable to experience a Dragon Education.
