We are delighted to announce that members of the Dragon community have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list 2021. The list recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom, and demonstrates the incredible efforts of hundreds of public sector and community works throughout 2020, and beyond.
“In a year that has truly tested the resolve and determination of those on the frontline, the New Year Honours list includes 1,239 recipients, recognised for their extraordinary contributions in all four nations of the United Kingdom.”
Those honoured represent a diverse range of businesses, from sourcing PPE for the pandemic, green energy, trade policy negotiations and to services exports in the creative industry such as cross-cultural theatre productions.
Recognised in the New Year Honours list for 2021 is Old Dragon Lt Col George Andy Middlemiss DL, BEM (OD 1962), awarded a BEM for voluntary service to ex-Service Personnel. Lt Col Middlemiss is Chairman of Perth and Kinross Branch SSAFA.
“This is an unexpected and marvellous honour, which is hard to put into words, but I am thrilled to be awarded this for the Perth and Kinross team of SSAFA volunteers … I am but one in a big team – so this is for my SSAFA Team.”
The following former Dragon parents were also recognised in the New Year Honours list for 2021:
The Hon. Felicity Waley-Cohen CBE (Fomer Parent) awarded a CBE for her services to Children’s Medicine. Felicity’s charitable work was in memory of her son, Thomas Waley-Cohen (OD 1998) who died of cancer, aged 20. The Oxford Children’s Hospital have a ward named in memory of Thomas following the support of the Waley-Cohen family. The ward cares mostly for children needing surgery from newborn up to the age of twelve.
“I was totally astonished — but whatever I did was in Thomas’ memory and for the Oxford Children’s Hospital. It would never have happened without the support of the amazing Dragon parents, local schools and businesses, family and friends.”
Felicity is a Trustee of the Robert and Felicity Waley-Cohen Charitable Trust.
Dr Natalie-Jane Macdonald MBE (Former Parent) awarded an MBE for her services to Healthcare, particularly during the COVID-19 Response. Dr Macdonald is Chief Executive Officer of Sunrise Living UK and Gracewell Healthcare and Chair, Nuffield Health.
