The Schuller family connection to the Dragon dates back to 1957, when Andrew Schuller (OD 1957) joined the School followed his brother Tom Schuler (OD 1961) and then finally followed by Andrews son, Nicholas Schuller (OD 2006). In this edition we take a Walk Down Dragon Lane with Andrew and Tom and compare a history of Dragons spanning over 15 years.

My time at the Dragon School in three words
Andrew: Work, Play, Friends
When I was a young Dragon, I wanted to be
Andrew: Policeman or Golfer
Eggy or marbles? Squares or Pin? Snakes or Rubix Cube?
Andrew: Conkers
My inspiration growing up
Andrew: Jacko and Stanley Matthews
At the top of my bucket list
Andrew: Writing family history
My most memorable moment at the Dragon
Andrew: Winning a clock at the Coronation celebrations by / guessing the weight of a sheep.
My biggest achievement
Andrew: Winning general paper prize
The advice I would give to my younger self
Andrew: Improve my singing voice so I could have sung in Pirates of Penzance.
In one sentence, what does it mean to be a Dragon?
Andrew: Sharing friendships
Since my Dragon days…
Andrew: I’ve worked in book publishing in Oxford, the US and Australia, mainly for Oxford University Press. Not a way to make lots of money but very satisfying.
Tom: I’ve moved around a fair bit – London-Paris-Glasgow-London-Warwick-Edinburgh-London-Paris-London. Now settled in Tufnell Park, North London. Worked mainly in adult education, as an academic and also as an international policy analyst. Still try to promote lifelong learning – and practising what I preach I have just signed up for an MA in AI and Ethics at Birkbeck (where I used to work). I’ve just completed what will probably be my final book , the Triple Helix, about ages and stages in the life course, arguing against chronological age as the sole measure.
Can honestly say the Dragon was the best part of my education – in and out of the classroom.
I have a photo of myself in the Dragon orchestra, holding a violin; I abandoned the violin asap, but now enjoy playing the clarinet at v basic grade.
Another photo of me hurling myself across a muddy goalmouth to make a heroic save – in my regular clothes, not games outfit, so major laundry challenge for my poor mum.
A third photo of the chess team; one fellow member is Willie Bach, now a Labour peer whom I reunited with recently.
