Music School News (Prep and Pre-Prep)

We aim to provide an enjoyable and engaging musical experience for our pupils through a broad curriculum, instrumental lessons, ensembles programme and extra-curricular activities. Keep up to date with our latest news here:

Summer Holidays 2015

James and Nicole attended the Musicale Intermediate String Orchestra course this Summer in Harpenden; Henry attend the Musicale Intermediate Band course and Leilani attended the Musicale Young Artists Symphony Orchestra course held in the same week. All four had a brilliant time playing new repertoire, attending lunchtime concerts given by the advanced students and evening concerts given by professional soloists and ensembles. They enjoyed various activities including a quiz and staff entertainment. Henry played a short solo beautifully in the concert; Leilani had the experience of playing Dvorak’s 8th Symphony and James and Nicole played Holst, Mozart, Vivaldi and Randy Newman’s ‘When She Loved Me’ from Toy Story. The concerts were held at the Public Halls in Harpenden on Friday, 14 August and Saturday, 15 August, 2015 to a packed audiences.

Lynams Instrument Workshop

Year 2 had a busy instrument workshop afternoon on Tuesday, 19 May, 2015 trying out some exciting instruments including harp, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, flute and French horn. The first part of the afternoon saw the visiting music teachers providing a demonstraton of the various instruments to the children. The children then moved around different classrooms in small groups, experiencing holding and producing a sound on each instrument. It was great to see the children so focused and keen to try something new.

Music for Youth

Congratulations to the Dragon Piano Trio who have been invited to perform at the National Festival for Music for Youth in Birmingham in July 2015. The group received fantastic feedback from their recorded entry including:

“The three musicians work well as an ensemble with very good shape and a powerful sense of performance. There is a wonderful feel and style throughout the music with great piano technique and very good string work.”

A Bit of Graffiti

Graffiti Classics, a String Quartet, visited the school on Monday, 20th April, and were inspirational with their infectious enthusiasm and outstanding playing. They gave a concert to E Block Strings, Middle School Strings and Year 3 Strings from Lynams. Their focus was to break down the barriers of classical music and make it fun, accessible and exciting. They were absolutely engaging from the outset and both staff and children loved the performance. Graffiti Classics stayed to work with Upper School Strings and Dragonetti and inspired children with their playing and input to the current repertoire.

National Youth Musical Theatre

A Block pupil, Florrie Antoniou, has just learned that she has progressed through several rounds of auditions to be cast in this year’s National Youth Musical Theatre production of Pendragon. The production will be staged in August at the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds and tells the story of King Arthur, from his childhood to the dark forces he must contend with for his kingdom. Not only does the name have a link to the Dragon, but the music is composed by our previous Dragon Head of Music, Peter Allwood. Having been a member of NYMT company last year, performing in the production Ragged Child, Florrie knows what to expect and is looking forward to rehearsals during the Easter and Summer holidays.
