Curriculum (Prep)

"Throughout the school a broad range of highly stimulating and challenging learning is undertaken across the curriculum."

ISI Integrated Inspection, November 2014

The Dragon Prep curriculum is tailored to the needs of the pupils and their future aspirations. While the National Curriculum is a useful starting point, departments adapt and enhance their programmes of study to ensure that every pupil is motivated, inspired and challenged. In addition to the core subjects of English and Mathematics, the Dragon syllabus includes Modern Languages, Classical Languages, Science, Music, Religious Studies, ICT, Art, Drama, Design and Technology, and PE. It also includes philosophy, ethics and the principles and practice of philanthropy.

Classes are small and streaming and setting are used. In this way a very individual approach can be offered to every child so that the learning style and pace is appropriate. The Dragon recognises that emotional health and academic development are interlinked.

At every level, we strive to make our pupils independent learners, well-prepared for the next stage in their development. By Years 7 and 8 the curriculum is planned largely, though not entirely, according to the Scholarship and Common Entrance requirements of the leading independent senior schools.

Our approach is designed to help pupils:

  • enjoy a happy and secure learning environment where they are valued
  • develop lively, enquiring minds where they question rather than merely accept
  • acquire knowledge and understanding which will equip them for future challenges
  • obtain skills that they can transfer to other subjects or situations
