Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) - Reception 4-5 yrs

The Early Learning Goals are used as the starting point to a creative and varied programme of activities during the children's first year as Dragons. This is based on three prime areas of learning, which are interconnected and support development in other areas:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Physical development

In addition to these prime areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts & Design

We are aware that pupils enter the Foundation Stage at a variety of stages in maturity and academic ability and that children learn the same thing in different ways. We cater for children's individual needs within each area of the curriculum, building on from their existing understanding and experiences.

The children have many opportunities to play and learn, both indoors and outdoors, in our newly developed outside area and with a wide variety of toys and equipment. Children learn most effectively through a mixture of self-initiated experiences and adult-planned instruction. In play, young children learn much about themselves and the world around them. The children are, therefore, given daily opportunities to explore and investigate in free play situations alongside their more formal teaching.

How can parents help?

Before your children start at school please ensure that they can meet their own personal needs, for example using the loo independently, dressing and undressing themselves (with minimum help) and using a knife and fork. It would help them further if they can:

  • use a pair of scissors
  • hold a pencil using a tripod grip (pencil resting on the middle finger and gripped lightly by the thumb and first finger)
  • recognise/write their name
  • be able to distinguish some letter sounds and recognise some numbers.
  • enjoy sharing books
  • play co-operatively

Admissions into the Early Years

Children are admitted full-time into Reception the September after their fourth birthday. The school day begins with registration at 8.45am and ends at 3.30pm. During the Christmas term, Reception children may opt to have a half day on Wednesdays.
