Summer Term Sports
In the summer term, we see a change of scenery, the posts come down and cricket takes centre stage, with Tennis also playing a major role across our many astroturf pitches.
Both boys and girls play Tennis as part of the regular Games Programme, whilst additional Clubs are offered outside of school hours, as part of our partnership with Premier Tennis along with squad practices for all year groups. Tennis matches are played against a number of school sides and the 21 tennis courts are certainly well utilised. Athletics is another sport that thrives in the summer term, with regular meetings leading up to the National Prep School Athletic Championships, where the Dragon has been the highest achieving Prep School in the country for the last two years with its impressive medal hauls. A real highlight of the sporting year is the last two weeks of term where the Games Programme turns exclusively to Athletics in a jamboree of individual and team pursuits. Mass participation is the key and the culmination is the fantastic sports day (or three days!) which allows everyone to compete on behalf of one's form.
This year, we are making the full transition towards the girls playing cricket as a major sport alongside tennis. The emphasis here will be very much on fundamental skills and developing a love of the game through coaching sessions and informal matches. Cricket is the main sport for the boys and the Dragon is lucky enough to have one of the best batting wickets on the prep school circuit, as well as ten all-weather nets available on the astroturf. A large number of Dragon children have been selected to play representative cricket for Oxfordshire in recent years with great success, and the school regularly puts out several sides at all age groups on a match day.
