Muscular Dystrophy Christmas Concert

From the Headmaster

Dear Parents,

The week began with a rousing hymn practice as we looked ahead to the season of Advent and Christmas. The school was in good voice and yesterday the choir provided a very enjoyable and varied programme in a concert at SJE in aid of Muscular Dystrophy. Thursday and Friday evenings see our staging of Arabian Nights, which promises to be a fine production. In other news, our sports teams have continued to enjoy tremendous successes at hockey and rugby. There have also been early individual successes for several pupils in A Block, achieving 13+ awards to their senior schools in Academic, Drama and Sport specialisms. At the Pre-Prep I observed an ICT lesson as the children developed their digital literacy and keyboard skills. This week I have also enjoyed afternoon tea with our newest boarders and was most impressed not only with the way they have settled into school life, but also with the wide ranging conversations the children held, including discussions of recent experiments in Science, as well as their wider interests such as origami and cosmology! Elsewhere pupil conversations at lunchtimes have now turned excitedly to the Dragon Sale and the various stalls that the children are preparing… it is clear that December is almost upon us!

With all best wishes,

Crispin Hyde-Dunn

Rhino Taking Shape

As part of our learning about Animals, Year 2 have been conservationists learning about the plight of the rhino. As well as researching rhino facts and listening to a talk about rhinos from Mr Bray, the children have made a life-sized baby rhino to raise awareness of the charity Rhinos Without Borders. The rhino will be decorated in the colours of the Dragon Values and you may just be able to spot it among the Prep’s Christmas decorations very soon!

Empty Classroom Day

Last week, Year 1 took part in Empty Classroom Day where all lessons during the day were taught outside. These included learning more about the Science behind icebergs, investigating the insulating effect of blubber in iced water, making and testing an inuit style kayak or umiak boat and starting to create an igloo made from empty milk bottles. Whilst the wind proved a little tricky at times for the DT activity, with materials being blown away across the playground, it all added to the excitement and enjoyment of the day and goes to show that great learning can occur anywhere, regardless of the weather!

The month of Movember has finally come to an end. As of today, the school community has raised over £5,000 for men’s health. With one particularly generous last-day donation lifting us over that vital target, we will be calling on Mr Pickup to honour his pledge and be clean shaven (except the eyebrows). We will finally discover what lies beneath the famous Gimli beard.

Thank you to all of the members of the Dragon School community who supported this worthy cause; whether that was through kind and generous donations, growing a moustache, wearing a faux mo, becoming more active or simply talking about health. It has been wonderful to see the school community acting together for Movember.

Thank you again for all of the support and donations over the last month.

Victorian Life

Last week saw E Block heading for the Chiltern hills as part of their humanities field trip. The children took part in a broad range of activities from learning how to map read and orienteer to experiencing a lesson in a Victorian school. Staff at the Chiltern Open Air Museum brought to life Victorian history through interactive workshops and tours of Victorian buildings moved to the site. The pupils were able to navigate their own way around the 45 acre site discovering the stunning Chiltern landscape and more than 30 rescued historic buildings ranging from an Iron Age roundhouse through Medieval barns and a working Victorian farm lovingly recreated. Both the staff and children had a wonderful day and returned with plenty of new information to digest in the classroom.

Scratch Club

A Group of C Block girls have been giving up their Monday lunchtimes for Scratch Club. They have been working on their own mini-games and learning new skills, which they share with the rest of the group so everyone can improve their projects.

Dragon Juice

Thank you to all those families who donated their apples to be made into Dragon Juice. The apples were pressed at Drovers Hill Farm and have been bottled in glass bottles with a beautiful label designed by Jane Zahl (2M.) We know that the bottles will be heavy to transport on the day of the Dragon Sale and so we will be offering pre-selling on both the school sites.

The cost of the bottle is £4 for one bottle or 6 for £20 (buy 5 get, 1 free) and the cost will be deducted from your school bill.

We are all aware of Old Dragons who are high profile actors, but there are also quite a number of OD’s who are authors and editors. The Library and the Archives are collaborating to display the wealth of material that has been created by the Old Dragon Community appropriate for the Dragon age group. The cabinet in the foyer will show some of the books that are available for loan within the Library written by these authors or editors.

In the Library foyer there is now a large picture frame, highlighting the brief biographies of these first four authors. These include the well-known author Lady Antonia Fraser, whose autobiography “My History”, now published in paperback, includes her childhood in Oxford and at the Dragon. Griselda Heppel, a parent of four Old Dragons, visited the Year 8 scholars to talk about writing, earlier this term. Her first two books, published in paperback, are based on a school, rather similar to the Dragon, and its history: “Ante’s Inferno” and now “The Tragickall History of Henry Fowst”.

The other two contributors were both members of staff: Michael Harrison and Christopher Stuart-Clark. In 1977 they edited The New Dragon Book of Verse, bringing up-to-date the 1935 version that sold all round the world. Since that editorial collaboration, they have published over 20 other poetry books with OUP. The book will be a highlighted feature of this year’s Dragon Sale.

The intention in the future is to choose another four authors or editors, and highlight them for a term. Many thanks to the library staff who have been so helpful.
