Music Outreach Projects
The Music Department is committed to forging links with other schools in the area as we believe that music is a natural facilitator to meet new friends and enjoy ensemble playing with other like-minded musicians. Last academic year, we held a Chamber Music Day for musicians in the area to experience performing in small
ensembles. Our Concert Band and Big Band visited the Blackbird Academy Trust Schools of Windale, Orchard Meadow and Pegasus to perform popular hits and introduce children to the different instruments. There has also been a Wind & Brass Day in collaboration with Oxford Philomusica which enabled children from 10 schools to participate in a day of specialised music with professional musicians for these orchestral families.
Through our relationship with Oxford Philomusica, we have also organised for our pupils to attend afternoon rehearsals at the Sheldonian Theatre each term, to enable our budding musicians to gain an insight into the workings of a professional orchestra. The next project is a Percussion Day.
Dragon Pre-Prep once again hosted the annual Year 3 Singing Day which was attended by 219 children from 6 schools, including Oxford High, St Ebbe’s, St Barnabas, Pegasus and Windale. The children learnt to sing in 2, 3, and 4 part harmony and gave a fantastic performance at the end of the day.
The Dragon School Choir performed at The Spirit of Christmas at Christ Church Cathedral in December for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and they were the only choir leading the congregation in carol singing. They also performed three pieces on their own to great acclaim from general public, parents, staff and celebrities! In addition to this, they were invited to perform alongside a professional choir in the Nordoff Robbins Carol Service at St Luke’s Chelsea, London. They conducted themselves maturely and were a credit to the school on both occasions.
