There are nine boarding houses at the Dragon all run by a married couples. Each house also has a matron who lives alongside the Houseparents. Most houses have one gap year matron but the three senior houses will seek to employ a "career" matron as well as gap year matrons. The three senior houses all have an assistant Houseparent whilst the other six have a "senior dorm taker. These members of staff provide extra support in the houses. All houses have their own laundries, recreation rooms, access to television, video, telephones and email. The Houseparents get to know the children in their house well, living alongside them with their own family. They provide a 'home from home' for the boarding children and are responsible for all appropriate pastoral and welfare provision. In year six and below the Houseparent is also the academic tutor whilst in the three senior houses the pupils are tutored by another member of staff.
Arrangements for the welfare and safeguarding of boarders are excellent. Boarders feel safe and extremely well cared for by a large team of dedicated staff. The school has robust procedures for safeguarding with excellent links to local agencies.
