Dragon rugby was given an inspirational
boost in December when two young
Old Dragons were picked to play in the
Varsity Rugby Match between Oxford
and Cambridge, both wearing the dark
blue of Oxford. Will Rowlands (OD
2005) and Gus Jones (OD 2007) both
started playing rugby at the Dragon. Will
lost only one match in his Dragon career
and went on to represent Independent
School Barbarians and Northampton
Saints Wanderers. Gus Jones skippered
an unbeaten Dragon 1
st
XV in 2006 and
captained the England U18 squad to
victory this season.
The Dragon teams’ pride in the
ODs achievements was soon matched by
their own: by the end of the season, the
rugby teams across the school had gained
victories in 61 per cent of an impressive
148 matches. The U13 and U11 teams
won 80 per cent of their games and, for
the third time in four years, the U11s
were winners of the Port Regis Festival.
I am delighted to see so
many Dragons and former
Dragons showing such great
sportsmanship, and making
their mark in rugby
John Baugh, Headmaster
