Skipper Day

Saturday 24 June 2017

On our annual Skipper Day, we were

delighted to thank Old Dragons, former

staff members and friends who kindly

included a gift to the Dragon in their Will.

Skipper members enjoyed lunch hosted

by John and Wendy Baugh and then made

their way down to the river for the Dragon

regatta. As they watched our young Dragon

skullers and some bemused punters, they

reminisced about swimming in the river

and taking part in dramatic plays on the

banks. A light breeze rippled through

the trees keeping everyone cool while

afternoon tea was served. It was a delightful

afternoon with our warm and generous

Skipper Members.

Memorial Service for Robin ‘Lofty’ Houghton

Saturday 17 September 2016

Robin Houghton, known affectionately as

‘Lofty’, died after a long, bravely fought illness

on Friday 27 May 2016.

The Dragon community gave thanks for the

life of Lofty at a Thanksgiving Service held at St

Andrew’s Church, Oxford, which was adorned

with flowers in Dragon blue and gold. The

Dragon Idris Choir sang two anthems and

encouraged the congregation to sing hymns,

ending with Lofty’s favourite,

. Ian

Murchie, a friend and colleague, delivered

a eulogy, raising a few giggles. Prayers were

led by Robert Startin (Lay Chaplain at the

Dragon) and Rev Ronnie Lloyd.

Lofty’s wife, Andrea, and daughters, Joanna

(1990) and Frances (1993), and their wider

family were pleased to see so many people

paying their respects and sharing memories.

Frances wore her silver medal from the

Rio Olympics – sadly, Lofty died before he

was able to celebrate her latest achievement.

Lofty was a keen supporter of British

women’s rowing and several members of the

rowing fraternity were also in attendance.

Remembrance Sunday

Sunday 13 November 2017

Autumn sunshine, clear notes and voices,

well-chosen words and poppies laid by

Dragons before the names of their forebears

who fell in the tragic year of 1916 marked a

powerful act of Remembrance this year.

OD Golf Day

Friday 19 May 2017

OD golfers met at Frilford Heath Golf Club

for their traditional sandwich lunch and

afternoon Stableford competition, when

they play for Inky’s silver flask trophy. A

competitive and enjoyable game saw Nick

Kane (1958) win on countback with 38 points

from Tom Bulford (1969), who had the

consolation win of the longest drive. Simon

Smith scored nearest the pin on the short 6th

of the Green course.

Richard Gordon (1962) and Staff (1979

– 2001) has taken over the organising of this

day, so please contact him directly on 01865

292904 or email

if you would like to play next year,

when the ODs and the St Edward’s Martyrs

golfers are for the first time joining together.

We much hope to see you at Frilford in 2018.
