The Dragon is located on 2 sites: Lynams on the Woodstock Road (for 4-7 year olds) and the Prep School on Bardwell Road (for 8-13 year olds).
Lynams (named after the family who had been headmasters at the Dragon for many years) was opened in 1995. In 2002 an extensive re-building programme, providing eight new classrooms and updating the library, ICT suite, art room, Reception playground and netball court was completed. In 2007 an Adventure Playground and an Outdoor Classroom area were added.
Structure of the school
The Lynams site is on a scale which is friendly for this age group. There are several areas for outdoor activities and the St Edward's playing fields (just across the Woodstock Road) are used for organised games. There are many communal areas such as the hall, library and purpose built gym, which is also used for whole school assemblies and school plays.
There are 215 children in the school from Reception (4-5 year olds) up to Year 3 (7-8 year olds). There are 3 parallel classes of approximately 16 children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, with 4 classes of up to 18 in Year 3. In addition to the teachers there are qualified teaching assistants. The school day begins at 8.45am and ends at 3.30pm. Reception pupils finish at 12.20pm on Wednesdays for their first two terms (Christmas and Easter). In the morning parents may choose to drop their children at the front gate of the school from 8:15am to save from parking. There is a mini-bus service which runs between the Bardwell Road site and Lynams.
The Headmistress of Lynams, Jane West, reports to John Baugh, the Headmaster. She is supported by a Deputy Head, Ina Wynell-Mayow, who is also the Curriculum Co-ordinator and liaises regularly with the Director of Studies and the Heads of Department at Bardwell Road. The Senior Mistress, Mary Kinnear, supports the daily running of the school and is also the Pastoral and Child Protection Co-ordinator.
After school activities
There is a programme of after school activities for Years 2 and 3 which all children attend. Activities vary throughout the year and in the past have included sports (e.g. football, cricket and rounders), sewing, model making, art, craft and drama, chess, International Club, Brainteasers, Science Club and Life Skills.
After School Care
Children from Years 1, 2 and 3 are able to stay at school until 5.25pm. There are 16 places in After School Care for which there is a termly charge. Staff supervise the children who stay and oversee various activities, after which the children have tea. |
