Bursaries

The Dragon 125th Anniversary Bursary Programme
The Governors of the Dragon School recognise that independent school fees are now at levels that, despite the best endeavours of their parents, exclude many children from benefiting from a Dragon education. Accordingly, the School supports five children in each year group from year 4 to Year 8 whose parents could not otherwise afford to send them to the Dragon.

Who is eligible?
Any child who will join the School in Year 4 aged 8 and whose family is able to demonstrate that they do not have all or most of the financial resources required to pay school fees. Exceptionally, children coming up from Lynams may also be considered.

Who makes Bursary decisions?
The Governors make the final decisions each year but have delegated the selection process to the Bursaries Committee, a sub committee of the Governing Body, advised by the Headmaster, Bursar and Registrar.

How are children selected?
Families submit an application form and financial questionnaire to the Bursaries Committee.  Once eligibility for financial assistance has been determined and verified, children are assessed in the same manner as all Dragon applicants. The Committee is looking particularly for children who will benefit most from being at the School and will contribute to life at the Dragon. There is an annual reassessment of financial need and awards may be adjusted up or down.

How much is a bursary award?
Bursaries provide between 50% and 95% of the day fee. A boarding bursary may be offered where it is felt is would be in the child’s best interests to board.

When do I have to apply?
The selection process starts in September each year and applications have to be received by the beginning of December for awards to start the following September. Those eligible for awards to enter in 2009 will need to have been born between 1st September 2000 and 31st August 2001 in order to enter Year 4 (aged 8) in September 2009 as day pupils or boarders.
