Christmas Term
The main winter sport for boys is rugby. At the top level the 1st XV can compete with the best in the country, and has enjoyed great success going unbeaten in 2006, including winning the Prior Park Rugby Festival and then in 2007 winnning the Papplewick Tournament. The 2nd, 3rd & 4th XVs might also play against a smaller school's 1st XV. The 2nd XV has remained unbeaten for the last two seasons! Matches are introduced gradually, with the emphasis on developing skills and enjoyment, whilst competing internally.
Hockey is the main winter sport for girls. They train on Astroturf and the school benefits from having three pitches, one of them full size. In Years 7 & 8, the best 26 or so are selected to make up the 1st and 2nd team squads. Matches for these girls are usually 11-a-side but can be 7 depending upon the size of the opposition school. The rest of the girls are divided (like the boys) into three equal ability groups (named after famous Old Dragon girls - Fraser's, Houghton's, Young's) and these will take it in turns to play matches against other school's 2nd and 3rd teams. In Years 5 and 6 there are squads for the As and Bs who regularly play 7-a-side matches. The rest of the girls will also be divided into groups and will play half a dozen matches each.
Orienteering is also organised for 8, 9 and 10 year olds, initially within our own grounds, then at the Parks nearby.
