Sport
The main aim of the sports department is that every child leaves the school having enjoyed playing games.
In the first year at the Dragon, children have three one-hour sessions a week with sole use of the fields, gym and swimming pool. The nine and ten year olds (Years 5 & 6) play games on Monday and Friday afternoons from 3 - 4 pm and from 2 - 4 pm on Wednesday afternoons. Children in their final two years play on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3 - 4 pm and Saturday afternoons, 2 - 4 pm.
Competition
We try to find fixtures against other schools for as many children as possible. This year Dragon teams will be involved in over 650 matches, with days when the school will be fielding as many as 28 teams. Whilst we are able to push some children on to national standards and sports scholarships, being a large school means that not every child is able to represent the school so the emphasis is on skill development. We also have a hotly contested internal competition between the four games groups. The King Farlowe Cup is awarded to the winning Group and the children develop a great loyalty to their team. Last year, over 30 separate competitions counted towards the Cup.
In most years the Dragon will field teams in rugby (including 7s), girls hockey, boys hockey, football, netball, cricket, rounders, boys tennis, girls tennis, table tennis, athletics, cross country, swimming, riding, golf, sculling, squash, fencing, judo, skiing, badminton and basketball.
