Green Travel

Green Travel ConvertAs a local Year 6 Dragon pupil who lives close to School, I didn’t really think twice about how I got to school until I got involved with the Eco Team.I used to travel to the Dragon every day by car and even when I got a bicycle, I never seemed to make the time to use it as it seemed so much easier to get into the car! When I went to an Eco Team meeting to discuss greener travel I suddenly realised that the way in which I was getting to school wasn’t eco-friendly at all. So, feeling rather guilty, I made a decision, got out the bike and tried cycling. For the first few days I thought it was all a bit of hard work and didn’t think I could keep it up but when I got used to cycling, became familiar with the roads and had organised my time a bit better in the mornings, I found it was easy, fun and I actually enjoyed the peace and quiet! Not only that, I now feel as though I have more responsibility and have gained some independence too. My Dad was a bit worried about me staying safe so he cycled with me for the first few trips to reassure himself. I always make sure I wear my helmet too.Not every day is ideal for cycling and there have been some occasions when the car has been useful. Perhaps next time it’s a rainy day and I don’t fancy getting on the bike I will try walking or using my scooter. Parents can help too - they could find their old bikes and try cycling along with their children to school to encourage them. They may even find they enjoy it too! The Dragon also runs a cycling proficiency course to help young cyclists get used to roads and all boarding pupils can attend this club as well as day children. Understandably, not everyone can walk or cycle but it would be nice to think that people could car share, even once in a while. And if you have to be dropped right outside the Dragon, please watch out for us cyclists and pedestrians - we are a lot smaller than you!
