Green Dragons
The Dragon has now launched a major school-wide sustainability initiative and has enrolled in the internationally recognised Eco Schools award programme which guides schools towards greater sustainability. The scheme provides a framework to help embed green principles in the heart of school life and is already running in 46 countries. Working through different stages of the programme will ultimately lead to Green Flag accreditation which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity. The process which leads to this coveted award will address a variety of environmental themes, ranging from litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity.
Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the eco-committee and, as a first step, will help carry out an audit to assess the school’s environmental status. Over the coming weeks and months the Action Team will identify key targets for sustainability and initiate a programme to improve our environment. The aim is to promote thoughtful ways of sustainable living within our entire community and to educate future generations of Dragons.

Sustainable Living
September is a busy month for harvesting and the Eco team have been gathering lots of fruit from around the Dragon grounds. We have a number of trees bearing pears, apples, plums and damsons, as well as fruit such as the tomatoes grown by the Greenfingers gardeners. These have already been used in a number of ways by Dragons in the Cauldron including making jams and conserves, crumbles, muffins and chutney. Some of the fruit has been taken up by the boarding houses, and the apple collection for a whole-school apple pudding to be made in the kitchens is underway! Windfalls unable to be used, plus cores and peelings are not wasted either: they are composted or put into special bins that go off to our green energy generating digester!
