A Diversity of Dragons
It is extraordinary just how many Dragons have gone on to make a name for themselves, and how wide the range of activities in which they have become involved. ODs have included a Poet Laureate, two Nobel Laureates, four VCs, a leading British composer of the 20th century, three members of Margaret Thatcher's government, a Leader of the House of Lords, a Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the Labour Party, and a founder of Private Eye.
While still hanging onto the day job as Dragon registrar, Desmond Devitt has turned editor and publisher in order to produce A Diversity of Dragons, a book about these people. It promises to make remarkably entertaining reading.
Included are the famous extracts from John Betjeman's Summoned by Bells featuring the Dragon, together with autobiographical extracts from Nevil Shute, Naomi Mitchison, John Mortimer, Jon Stallworthy and Paul Watkins. But there is much more: political Dragons, sporting Dragons, media Dragons....
The 160 pages include articles by Robert Armstrong, Jack Davenport, Alain de Botton, Tim Hunt, Patrick Jenkin, David and Stephen Jessel, Dom Joly, Robert Moore, Rageh Omaar, David and Henry Shukman, Nicholas Shakespeare and John Woodcock, to name but a few.
