Dragon Maths Recognised by Ofsted

Dragon Maths

A recent report by Ofsted has selected the Dragon as an example of good practice teaching in maths; one of only ten independent schools across the country, the only one in Oxfordshire, to be highlighted in this way.

The report praised both the Dragon and its Pre-prep, Lynams, for the standard of their Maths teaching and the methods used, which other schools could adopt to improve their Maths provision. “It’s about challenging children, getting them to enjoy what they are doing and most of all teaching for understanding” commented Dr Emily Macmillan, Head of Maths at the Dragon. “There’s more to Maths than learning your times-tables” she said. The Dragon runs a Maths day where a whole year group competes in teams of three combining problem solving, number skills, and puzzles. Every child also has access to the ‘Mathletics’ website where they are able to attempt interactive exercises. This allows us to set children particular exercises to support their class learning and target them for children’s specific learning needs, she explained. The site also has a ‘play live’ facility where children can compete against each other (and children from all over the world).

Every year Dragons enter both local and national maths competitions and are frequently the best team in Oxfordshire, with some pupils making the Top 50 across the whole country.
