On 14th October 2010 110 Year 6 pupils from 15 primary and prep schools in the state and independent sectors came to the Dragon School to join our Green dragons on the Eco Team to participate in a day-long Eco Conference – thought to be unique because of the age of each "delegate". In addition to our local prep and primary school delegates, pupils travelled from as far afield as West Sussex to share their ideas and initiatives on sustainable practice. The children heard talks from Cool Earth about saving the rainforest, about green IT, and met local artist, Angela Palmer, whose Ghost Forest installation is currently at Oxford’s Natural History Museum. In workshops sessions they calculated the air miles in a shopping basket, studied scale models of green energy projects, and discussed waste and sustainability. Delegates were also treated to a preview of a song from Ocean World, the environmental musical to be performed by C Block in November. Dragon pupils, who hosted the day, illustrated the school’s commitment to biodiversity by demonstrating their beekeeping skills. In addition to poster presentations, hives, bee suits and a video on swarm catching, the beekeepers brought to the session a new display hive with bees intact - a great way to see the bees ‘at home’! No presentation on bees would be complete without a tasting of the Dragon bees’ honey, or “Dragon Nectar” and this was eagerly devoured by interested fans of the project. “Weaving the eco message through the curriculum is crucial if it’s not to be seen as ‘out of the ordinary’”, said science teacher Ma Heath, who organised the event. “It’s about sharing ideas and then taking practical action, making sure we translate what we hear into practical initiatives that makes all our lives a brighter shade of green”.
