Design & Technology

The Design and Technology department is housed within the Art and Design Building but is taught as an independent subject in its own right.

Students are encouraged to develop their natural curiosity of design in all they see around them from the simplest things they take for granted to the seemingly more complex. Underpinning this are firm principles on which their learning is based. These include gaining knowledge and understanding of the following:

• Existing Products
• Materials/Components - including joining and combining processes, recognising new materials and processes, and identifying their potential uses
• Structures
• Electronic and Communications Technology
• Mechanisms and Control Systems
• New Technologies and their applications - including computer aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM)
• Single and Quantity Production Techniques - including those focusing on quality assurance

Lessons involve a combination of teacher led oral discussions, practical work and written folder work. Throughout their lessons the pupils use computer packages including Techsoft 2d design and Pro Desktop 8 allowing them to produce and model artefacts.
