Curriculum

"We have failed, unless we have helped the child develop his mind and his capacities in his own way, unless we have given him full scope for all the imagination and originality that is in him."

Skipper Lynam, (1908), Headmaster of the Dragon 1886-1920

"Let us still have a School where learning comes first, where children learn how to learn rather than what to learn!"

John Baugh, Headmaster of the Dragon since 2002

"Pupils’ achievements are strongly supported by dynamic, knowledgeable teaching. Lessons are conducted at a brisk pace so that pupils enjoy their learning, give of their best and achieve success. Pupils’ individual abilities are well understood."

ISI Inspection Report November 2009

The Dragon curriculum is tailored to the needs of the pupils and their future aspirations. While the National Curriculum is a useful starting point, departments will adapt and enhance their programmes of study to ensure that every pupil is motivated, inspired and challenged. In addition to the core subjects of English and Mathematics, the Dragon syllabus includes Modern Languages, Classical Languages, Science, Music, RS, ICT, Art, Drama, Design and Technology, and PE; it also includes philosophy, ethics and the principles and practice of philanthropy.

Classes

Classes are small and streaming and setting are used. Thus children can perform at the speed that suits them best and a very individual approach can be offered to every child. From Year 4, pupils are organised into three bands of ability and in Years 5 and 6 they are placed in streamed forms. Maths, French, Latin and Humanities are also setted by subject at various stages.

At every level, we strive to make our pupils independent learners, well-prepared for the next stage in their development. By Years 7 and 8 the curriculum is planned largely, though not entirely, according to the Scholarship and Common Entrance requirements of the leading independent senior schools.

Our approach is designed to help pupils:

  • enjoy a happy and secure learning environment where they are valued
  • develop lively, enquiring minds where they question rather than merely accept
  • acquire knowledge and understanding which will equip them for future challenges
  • obtain skills that they can transfer to other subjects or situations

Assessment

Every pupil and parent receives a report twice a term which details achievement and effort. The strong tutorial system ensures that every child's success is celebrated and rewarded while those pupils whose reports are less satisfactory can be helped and supported. There are two Parents' Meetings during the year and regular and open communication is encouraged between home and school.
