Dr Andrew Murray Visits Dragon
From the Headmaster
First Exeat is upon us already and we have had a very promising start to the school year. The rugby and hockey teams have had a lot of success on the pitches and I have already had quite a number of children visit me to get Headmaster’s Commendations signed off. There is much to look forward to in the coming weeks so please spend a few minutes glancing at the calendar over the weekend.
I look forward to welcoming the A Block parents to our meeting on Sunday – with a prompt start at 6.00 p.m. (See below)
I hope you all manage to have a relaxing and sunny weekend.

Bring Books
Monday is Donate a Book Day. Please remind Dragons to bring in a book which they have read and which they think another child of their age, who may not have books of their own, may also enjoy.
Ready, Get Set...

The Dragon has been selected to join a special community of schools who demonstrate a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values: respect, friendship, equality, excellence, inspiration, courage and determination. Membership of the ‘Get Set Network’ gives the Dragon a number of benefits including the chance to meet 2012 Olympians, to tour the Olympic Park and be first in line for school tickets to the Games. Next year the school will be hosting its own Primary School Olympics, welcoming neighbouring schools for a day of friendship, learning and of course sport.
Keep on Running
The Dragon’s budding cross-country runners were treated to a master class in endurance sport last Friday when adventure athlete, Dr. Andrew Murray visited the school (See main picture). Having recently completed a staggering distance of 2659 miles from Scotland to the Sahara, Dr. Murray was well placed to answer the children’s running related questions on all things from breathing to blisters. Dr. Murray ran around the fields with the group to help them develop their technique and style before later enthralling children at Spectrum with his presentation ‘Running Beyond Limits'.
Guiding Future Dragons

At the Open Morning last Saturday it was the turn of some of the C Block to act as guides for prospective Dragons. They did an excellent job which was greatly appreciated by the visiting families - and they appeared to enjoy themselves thoroughly.
Busy Boys

School House boys have been enjoying some winter cricket. After school they divide their time between cricket, football, music, Cowboys and Indians and rugby. They even have had time to celebrate birthdays, too.

School House have also completed their first tournament of the term: many congratulations go to George McVey for his win in the pool tournament, in a tense and close final with Harry Vaughan Williams.

Gunga Model Makers

The architects, designers and builders of tomorrow were in evidence this week, as Gunga held a Lego Model Making competition during evening dorms. The winning designs were a rugby pitch, a medieval battle scene and a machine gun.

A Block Forum
A reminder that the A Block Forum takes place on Sunday 2 October in the Lynam Hall starting at 6.00 p.m. The main focus of the evening is ‘Managing Moving On’- how The Dragon addresses the challenges that children may experience in their final year and their transition to senior school. There will also be an opportunity to hear more about the Active Learning Programme and a chance to chat to your child’s Tutor in the Forum afterwards. Letters have been emailed out about this event. If you would like to attend, please email

. This will help us plan the evening.
Fayre Day
On Thursday, the D Block Fayre will once again appear, as if by magic, in the back playground at 12.30 p.m. D Block children are preparing stalls and all pupils are invited to come along to the Fayre with up to £2.00 to spend. All funds raised this year will be donated to the Community Arena fund at Oxford City Football Club.
LYNAMS NEWS
Young Musicians

As a result of the Lynams Year 1 instrumental scheme (which is offered during class lessons in the Summer Term) a large number of children started violin, cello, guitar, piano, recorder, flute and percussion lessons last Christmas Term. Seven of the violinists progressed sufficiently to take their Trinity College Initial Violin Examination in the Summer Term this year; all achieved very encouraging results and each received a report and certificate at a recent Special Achievers Assembly.
Letter Learning

As part of their topic Our Local Area, Year 1 has been learning about addresses and how to write them on an envelope. Last Friday each class headed down the road to the South Parade post box. Everyone sent a letter to their parents which they had addressed themselves. It was also an opportunity for the children to look at some physical and human features - and for some to have a chat with the postman.
DRAGON SALE UPDATE
It’s a Wrap

Are you amongst the 20% of the population who have already started to plan for Christmas? If so you might like to know that Northbrook Gift Wrap is now open for business online. The Dragon Sale will receive a bumper 22% cash back on every item sold. Along with gift wrap for year-round occasions, Christmas bags and ribbons galore, this year there’s also the chance to win a fabulous £2,000 voucher for a Disneyland Paris holiday (and to double the benefit to the Sale at the same time).
Card Creativity
If you’re looking for bespoke Christmas cards, the ever popular children’s designs are back – this week every child at the Dragon will receive a template to bring home in time for Exeat so they can design their very own Christmas card. Designs need to be returned to the Dragon Lodge by Monday 10 October to ensure swift delivery of the finished cards. Details of how to order along with a downloadable template (in case of emergency or if you fancy having a go yourself!) can be found on the sale website.
And finally, a huge thank you to everyone who has been in touch to offer all sorts of support and ideas for the Sale this year – please do keep them coming!

From the Dragon Sale Team
