Junior Houses Join Forces for Fun
From the Headmaster
Term continues to go well and I remain hugely impressed with the energy and dynamism of Dragons as they tackle their day and that of my colleagues in teaching and helping them.
Thank you to all parents for the excellent support you give the children during their matches. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to familiarise yourselves with an extract from the National Coaching Foundation which, we believe, will help promote an enjoyable and positive environment for players, spectators, coaches and referees. Please click here.
One week to go before the first Exeat so please remind yourselves of the pick-up times next Friday, 30 September.
Finally, am attending the IAPS Annual Conference in the first part of next week, so I won’t be around until Wednesday evening, but please do continue to keep in touch through the usual channels.

Spectrum
This evening’s Spectrum is a talk by Dr Andrew Murray. 'Running Beyond Limits', To run a marathon takes an incredible amount of training, commitment and determination. To run two marathons two days running requires twice the amount of effort.

In 2011 Andrew ran the equivalent of over 101 consecutive marathons. Incredibly, he ran from John O’ Groats to the Sahara Desert covering a staggering distance of 2659 miles in just 77 days and 8 hours, setting a new British record in the process.
Fathers’ Feast

More than 130 Dragon Dads attended the Fathers’ Breakfast on Saturday morning. This annual social event proved popular as ever and offered the chance for Dragon fathers to get together. The Headmaster welcomed the fathers and outlined what a productive and busy start to Christmas Term it had already been at the Dragon. Chris Palmer and his catering team laid on a handsome BBQ breakfast by the river and despite the forecast of heavy rain, the morning remained sunny throughout providing a great backdrop for sausages and bacon.
Fun Fitness Club
The Dragon is offering a new Club this term from 4.30 - 5.30 p.m. If your child would like to improve or maintain their speed, agility, running technique or fitness then this is the club for them. If you are interested in your child attending this club, please contact

Blackberries for All
Over the first weekend back at school, the four Junior Houseparents went for a two hour walk accompanied by 62 children, 4 dogs and 8 members of staff. They all enjoyed a lovely warm September afternoon stroll, some blackberry picking and plenty of running and playing (see main picture).
Quizzing Gunga

The Gunga Din Evening Quiz League kicked off this week. The fortnightly event held during evening dorms is hosted by the Quizmeister himself, Mr Edwards. This week the boys answered questions on bones of the body, countries ending in ‘-ia’, and the colour red! Prizes will be awarded at the end of term to the team that tops the league.
Victorious Colts

On Saturday, the Colts A won the Port Regis Rugby Festival with some exciting rugby. They gained notable victories over Clifton, Blundells and Caldicott before facing Millfield in the Final. A terrific team effort saw the Dragon win comfortably by 28 – 0. The team’s excellent performance bodes well for the season ahead.
National Swimming Success
Robert Youngs do Patricinio won a place in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke Finals at the British Gas ASA National Age Group Swimming Championships over the summer holidays. He is currently ranked in the top 10–11 year old breaststroke swimmers in Great Britain and is training with the City of Oxford Swimming Club.

Flu Vaccine
With the Autumn Term now upon as and the flu season around the corner we would like to advise parents that only children who are eligible for the flu vaccine will be offered this by the Local Health Authorities. The criteria for eligibility includes those with severe asthma, diabetes and those who are immune compromised, but further information and advice can be sought from your local doctor’s surgery or online. Each year we get many parents phoning the Dragon Health Centre requesting their child receive the flu vaccine. The Health Centre will only be overseeing the vaccination of any boarders who are eligible and parents of those children will be contacted when the vaccine is released.
Team Building

The sun shone brightly on Saturday as B Block rose to the challenges of the Team Building Morning. From the ‘Human Knot’ which proved almost impossible to undo, leaving many a Form and Tutor tied up, to the ‘Chasm of Doom’ which saw a number of B Blockers clinging onto each other for dear life. ‘Nail It’ and ‘Blind Art’ had most of them puzzled and the ‘Human Alphabet’ clearly highlighted some future leaders of the country. This was a great morning for bonding and for getting to know each other.
Anyone for Conkers?

Mr Stuart-Clark and the new boys went to collect conkers last week. After Sir drilled a hole in them all and added a little string, the boys enjoyed a 'friendly match' in the garden.
Dragon Sale 2011 - Update from the Team

The Countdown Begins....The Dragon Christmas Charity Sale is without doubt one of the great Dragon School traditions. Each year more than 400 parents, staff and children get involved in making the Sale happen, and last year, with everyone’s enormous generosity and help and despite 12 inches of snow, the Sale raised over £84,000 which has now been distributed to 66 charities supporting children, young people and families both here and abroad.
From jam and chutney making and cake baking to turning out cupboards for nearly new items, donating prizes to the auctions and helping with the run-up and on the day, there are many different ways to get involved in the Sale. Over the coming weeks we’ll be updating you on all the opportunities leading up to the day of the Sale itself, Saturday 17th December and we’re also extremely keen to widen the children’s involvement in the Sale and so this year we’re on the lookout for budding Dragon Apprentices with big ideas (and perhaps a grown up or two to help them on their way), and we promise that they’ll all be hired, not fired!

The Unicorn (pictured above) is just one of the many beneficiaries of the funds raised by the Dragon Sale, and this week and next week at the North Wall in Oxford pupils are exhibiting their own work alongside that of established dyslexic artists.
Please do get in touch with us via the website or by email
