Nicholas Knatchbull Travel Fund

Nicholas KnatchbullThe Nicholas Knatchbull Travel Fund (previously known as the Nicholas Knatchbull Memorial Fund) was established in memory of Nicholas Knatchbull, an Old Dragon who was tragically killed alongside his grandfather, Lord Louis Mountbatten when a bomb exploded on their fishing boat on August 27th 1979.

Nicholas and his twin brother Timothy were two of five brothers who attended the Dragon School between 1956 and 1978. Their nephew, also Nicholas, left the Dragon in July 1994.

The intention when setting up the Fund was to offer financial assistance to Dragons and Old Dragons to enable them to take part in activities and expeditions which encourage initiative and foster understanding between young people both in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Assistance has been given to a large number of expeditions ranging from a motor bike journey from Cape Town to Cairo; assisting in an orphanage in Morocco; teaching English to street children in Quito, Ecuador; various trekking trips to the Himalayan Mountains; wild life studies in the rainforests of south east Asia and in the waters of the Pacific and many others.

Lord Mountbatten with Nicholas and Timothy Knatchbull, opening the Dining Room at The Dragon, June 1975Nicholas' mother, Countess Mountbatten of Burma CBE, and the other Trustees of the Fund are determined to promote the Fund and thus keep alive an active memory of a most active Old Dragon. Nicholas and his twin brother Timothy went on to study at Gordonstoun School in Scotland after the Dragon.

Many Old Dragons whilst preparing for their GAP year have applied for and received grants from the Fund. Applications from Old Dragons are welcomed and, should a grant be awarded, it is a requirement that the recipient should write a report about his or her trip. They may also be invited back to the Dragon to talk to the children about their adventures. Since the fund's inception, over £20,000 of grants have been awarded. (View recent reports)
