Bursaries Programme

In 2002, the 125th anniversary of the School, the Dragon launched a bursaries programme to provide fee support for children whose families could not otherwise afford an independent education. The programme originally allowed for five children each year from E Block on a sliding scale up to 80% of the day fee. In 2005 the Governors approved an enhancement to the scheme to allow funding of up to 95% of the fees. Where appropriate, they also agreed that the scheme could be extended to boarders.

How many children have been supported?

The Scheme was launched through a preliminary fundraising round initiated in the academic year 2002/03. As a result, four children joined the school in September 2003, and a further five have joined us each year from September 2004. In each case, funding support is available for their entire careers at the Dragon.

How much is required to fund a Bursary?

In 2008/09, a donation of £75,000 is required to fund a single bursary award from E Block (Year 4) to A Block (Year 8). Donations of £300,000 or more can be invested so that the income earned will fund a bursary.

How are the bursaries funded?

The bursaries are being funded with generous donations from Old Dragons, Dragon families and other friends of the School, which are 'ring-fenced' and restricted to the purpose of providing bursaries:
  • some individuals are funding a child through an annual gift over five years
  • since 2003, leaving parents have joined together each year to fund a child entering the School the following September
  • an endowed bursary fund has been raised in memory of Nicholas Knatchbull by his friends and family

How can we help?

Any and all gifts are very welcome. We would ask that you consider a gift at a level that is most comfortable for your own situation. Every gift of whatever size makes a real difference, both to the children supported by the Scheme and, through their presence, to the whole School community.
