1950s Rugby Reunion

Roddy Richards a member of the 1959 undefeated 1st XI wrote to the Development Office to suggest a reunion lunch. This idea quickly turned into a reunion for the 1st XI of the decade. Some 42 ODs accepted and arrived for lunch on Saturday 10th October. There were players from all the teams. Sizes and shapes had altered since our playing days, but faces had “matured” and the odd wrinkle had appeared. The laughter and the reminiscences were soon the order of the day. We had an excellent lunch and an amusing address from John Baugh, the Headmaster, who joked that we had played rugger in our day, not rugby.

After lunch we watched the 1st XI play Clifton, a school we had all played against. The 1955 team remembered the string bag fight on Didcot station whilst the staff ‘refreshed’ themselves in the bar! Anyway, the Dragon team showing all the spirit for which Dragon rugby is still renowned, won a tight match 14-12. The last people to leave match tea were the ODs - still talking!
