Cheltenham Challenge
C Block Take The Cheltenham Challenge

From the Headmaster

On Thursday, 21st October (7.00 p.m., Lynam Hall) and Friday 22nd (11.00 a.m., Lynam Hall) I will be offering opportunities for parents to learn more about our plans for future development. These sessions are open to all parents, including those at Lynams and I look forward to welcoming as many parents as possible. If you would like to attend, please send an e-mail to my PA, Rachel, letting her know which session you are attending and how many places you will need reserved. (Please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   to reply and do not e-mail the address which brought you DragonNews.)

I’m sure you would all like to join me on congratulating James and Emma Piper on the safe arrival of Ferdie Piper (9lb 10oz) last weekend.

Sunday Service

It has been good to see a large number of parents at the Sunday Services this term. We have invited General R.L. Kirkland CBE MA (Officer Commanding 4th Division) to speak at our service on 10 October. (10.00 a.m. in the Lynam Hall – all welcome.)

Rugby Fixture Cancellation

Bloxham have unfortunately had to cancel Saturday’s match v Chad 1A due to illness. Many apologies.

Rugby at Clifton

Please note that there are three locations for rugby at Clifton tomorrow: the 1st XV and Bardwell 1A XV are playing at “Newfields” (Walled Garden) at Clifton College Prep in the middle of Clifton; Colts A will be just round the corner on “Lower Slopes” (Senior School main site by the Prep School); Bardwell 1B XV are playing at Beggars’ Bush ground, across the suspension bridge on the edge of Bristol.

Directions to all venues are available here. All matches are 2.45 p.m. kick-off.

Spectrum

Tonight’s Spectrum is a split affair. The A & B Block will be meeting Cally Robson, founder of 'She's Ingenious'. (Lynam Hall, 6.45 p.m.). Cally’s web site can be found by clicking here. In spite of the title, this is definitely a Spectrum for boys as well. In the face of powerful media signals, how do you inspire young people to "find their thing" and follow their individual star? How can they "become who they really are"? Cally will be encouraging Dragons to identify the personal passion, the "something special" that is unique to them and could lead to a fulfilling and successful adult life. For her, personal "success" is often about identifying what you want to change in the world.

The E, D & C Blocks will have 'An Evening of Storytelling' with Daniel Morden (Forum, 6.45 p.m.) Daniel will tell adventure stories from his award-winning book,
‘Dark Tales from the Woods’. He has been a professional storyteller since 1989 and has travelled the world telling tales, from the Arctic to the Pacific to the Caribbean. He regularly performs at the National Theatre and The Barbican Centre and is the author of six books for young people.

Variety Show

The Variety Show, which takes place next week over two evenings on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 October, is clearly going to be a very well attended event. While no tickets are to be issued for either performance, to avoid disappointment, it would be advisable to reserve a seat via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Please note that the Friday performance is proving to be very popular so a quick reply will hopefully ensure your place in the audience.

Dragon children in the audience should wear normal school uniform (not casuals). Please note that those performing will be given something to eat before the show but for those in the audience, other arrangements will have to be made.

Christmas Concert

The ‘Spirit of Christmas’ charity concert at Christ Church Cathedral, with candlelit carols, will take place on Tuesday 7 December at 7.45 p.m. As in previous years, the Dragon School Chamber Choir will be taking part.

‘Spirit of Christmas’ features familiar folk of stage and screen who will read and perform, including this year The Wire star, Dominic West. The concert raises money and awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and The Q Trust in memory of Quentin Crewe (a Dragon grandfather) and Mark Reynolds, both sufferers of the disease and two extraordinary men who inspire other children and adults with Muscular Dystrophy. For tickets, please ring 020 7803 4828, email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   or go online: www.ticketweb.co.uk. Dragon parents Candida Crewe and Jane Byam Shaw are helping to organise the concert. Last year’s event was a magical experience and it is always popular, so book early.

Art in St Ives

Art Scholars in St Ives

Last Thursday 26 eager A Block Art Scholars, accompanied by 4 equally keen staff, set off for a long weekend to explore the art, landscape and culture of south west Cornwall. On route to St Ives the party stopped in Truro to see the expressive landscape paintings of Kurt Jackson at the Lemon Street Gallery; the children were impressed by the prices that a living British artist working outside of the capital could command! London Concert for Hospice Care

Chamber Choir

On a lovely warm London evening last Thursday, 30 members of the Chamber Choir, accompanied by Mr Madden and conducted by Ma Van Tromp, opened the London Chamber Orchestra’s season at St John’s Smith Square. The concert for Helen and Douglas House also supported the ‘Live Deep. Love Music’ project which celebrates hospice care and is sponsored by Countess Yoko Nagae Ceschina. The project is enabling Japanese paediatricians to establish their own hospice movement. The choir sang an anthem ‘Hear my Voice’, specially commissioned for this concert, composed by Masanori Katoh and adapted by John Madden. All were delighted to participate in a wonderful evening and to be able to play a part in the development of hospice care in the UK and in Japan. Thank you to all parents who supported the Choir and to the Countess for the lollipops!

Saturday 16 October is Open Day at Bardwell Road. We will be welcoming prospective boarding and day families for tours around the school on a normal working morning. Parents’ Evening

Parents of E, D & C Block children are reminded of the forthcoming Formtakers’ Introductory Evening this Sunday 10 October at 6.00 p.m. The C & D Block event will take place in the Forum and the E Block event in the Dining Hall.

Collection of Day Children

Please would parents of day pupils note the following collection arrangements. On weekdays from Monday to Friday, day pupils should go home at 4.15 p.m. unless they have an After-School Club. If children are not being collected until later (due to waiting for a sibling or sharing a lift) they should go to the dining room for tea, and then go straight to the Library where they should wait until they are collected. They can get on with their Prep, read quietly or listen to a story tape in the Library which is supervised until 6.00 p.m. There is a phone in the Library, so that you can get a message to your child if you are running late (01865 315465). As the days are now drawing in, it is especially important that children don’t wait on the pavement near the Lodge for long periods of time; please collect them from the Library before 6.00 p.m.

10 Drummers Drumming

Due to the growth of percussionists in the school, the Headmaster has kindly purchased two new electronic drum kits for the Senior boys’ boarding houses. The equipment will enable boarders in both houses to practice without disturbing the rest of the house!

New Drum Kits for Senior Houses

David Smith, Head of instrumental Studies and one of the regular Gunga Dorms Takers gave the boys a special lesson last night to show them how to use the kit and they were very excited to see its capabilities.

Leadership Challenge

Eight C Block children went to Cheltenham College on Tuesday to participate in a prep school leadership challenge. (See main picture). This involved a ‘round robin’ of activities for the nine prep schools competing for the cup. Challenges ranged from tower building, stepping stones, removing an ‘unexploded bomb’ from a circle with only two ropes, blindfolded instruction giving, fishing off a plank with a magnet and transporting eight footballs without using hands. The Dragon came a very creditable 4th and the children very much enjoyed competing.
