Age UK
C Block Present to Age UK

From the Headmaster

Term is back in full swing after a brief break last weekend. In the coming weeks we look forward to the Sheldonian Concert on 15 February (see below) and the visit of Charley Boorman for next week’s Spectrum. Please continue to keep an eye on the calendar.

I’m sure you would like to join me in congratulating Peter McClelland on his appointment as Housemaster to YK Pao School, Shanghai. Peter has worked at the school for over twenty-five years and we are delighted for him that he is able to take this next, exciting step in his career.

Holiday Artists

Dragon Holiday Art

Currently on show in the Dragon art gallery is all the work produced for the Holiday Art Competition based on the theme of “Sound”. We have a variety of pieces on show ranging from observational drawings, balloons filled with hundreds and thousands,  to a large snoring painting! The entries will be judged with the help of the art captains. The work seen above is a painting by Sam Way 7PO titled Jazz Blues.

Summer Music Course

The annual Young Dragon Music Makers course will take place from Tuesday 30 August to Friday 2 September - four days filled with fun and music.  It is designed and run by the music department for pupils currently in Years 2 and 3 and E Block. Full details will be published later this term but this early notification is intended to help parents plan their schedule at the end of the summer holiday.

Boarder Post

Parents are reminded that letters or parcels for boarders will reach them much more quickly if the House name is clearly marked under the pupil’s name.

Judo Girls

Judo Girls

Over the Exeat weekend, Tiggy Greenfield, Isabel Gibson, Za Kosobucki and Hannah Biddle participated in the IAPS Girls Judo Championships. The girls fought really well, showing great spirit and determination. Hannah earned a well-deserved Silver and Za a bronze. It was a brilliant show from the girls and we are confident of further success from all of them in the not too distant future.

Web Tip of the Week

Once logged into the parents’ area of the website you can return to the login page to see fixture and event changes, and to access the calendar, by clicking on the ‘Current Parents’ tab that appears above the top menu.

Sheldonian Concert

All parents are warmly invited to the school concert at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford on Tuesday 15 February at 7.00pm. The evening will feature a variety of Dragon music by performers from Year 3 to A Block. The concert will finish at approximately 8.30 p.m. While children are of course very welcome to attend we do ask, though, that for the sake of our musicians, that those below Year 3 do not come on this occasion. Admission is free but you will need a ticket to enter the theatre.  If you would like to come but have not applied for tickets, or have not received them yet, do please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Did You Hear?

Headmaster John Baugh was recently interviewed on BBC Radio Oxford’s Afternoon Show by Jo Thoenes. If you missed it, you can listen again via the media page of the website where you will also find a selection of items about the Dragon in the media.

Age UK Visit

The school was delighted to welcome representatives of Age UK to assembly on Monday. Paul Cann and Diana Roberts spoke about the work of the charity in Oxfordshire. They also explained how the magnificent sum of £14,443.24, donated by the C Block following their record-breaking ‘channel swim’, will be spent. A big thank you to all who so generously supported the C Block and Age UK - you have certainly set a challenge for future events. (See main picture).

Sculling Championships

The scullers will be racing at the South of England Indoor Rowing Championships this Sunday. The Dragon is entering its biggest team to date; full details are on both the website and the sculling noticeboard; each child has also been given the plan for the day to take home. Forty scullers will race individually in their age groups and then the top athletes will race in teams to be confirmed on Sunday. In the event of any problems on the day, Mr Walker can be reached on 07867 857618. Please note that the championships are at the Oxford Brookes Sports Centre, not at Wheatley Leisure Centre. It is best to park on the Headington Hill Campus and walk over the footbridge to the centre.

Fencing Boy

Congratulations to Patrick Caffrey who has come third in the Southern Region Sabre Qualifier. Patrick will now go to the British Youth Championships for the second year running.
