 Dragon Staff Pantomime |
From the Headmaster
The weeks are racing by and I wish everyone a good Exeat and a last chance to recharge the batteries before the rush to the end of term.
Please read the section on how we plan to manage the extra Public Holiday in April which, from many schools’ point of view, could not have been put in a more awkward place.

Royal Wedding Public Holiday
First, congratulations to the happy couple. Second, how to work around the additional Public Holiday? Parents will recall that the School had already announced that we would not be taking the early May Bank Holiday due to the fact that we would only just have returned from the Easter holidays. With the announcement of 29 April as a Public Holiday, we are left with three realistic options: To take the holiday and break up for a long weekend twenty-four hours after returning to school, to delay the start of term until 3 May, or continue to work through as planned and do all we can to have a great day celebrating the wedding at school. We have decided on the third option. There will therefore be school on Friday 29, Saturday 30 April and (as already announced) 2 May 2011. There may well be families who are required or may wish to attend the celebrations in London on 29 April and we’ll manage those requests nearer the time. However, for now, please note that the day of the Royal wedding will be a school day and we will make sure that we celebrate the occasion appropriately and memorably.
Head Checks at Home
Head lice are currently a problem throughout the country and the Dragon certainly has not escaped nit free! The Boarding Houses work hard to keep this problem under control by using the wet combing method initially, followed by prescribed lotions when infestation occurs. It is important however the monitoring of head lice continues when the children are home. If all day and boarding parents follow routine checking at home it will assist us in keeping the problem in hand. If you have treated your child for head lice please inform your child’s tutor or Houseparent respectively of the date and treatment used.
C Block’s Superb Swim
This week saw the annual challenge to C Block to ‘Swim the Channel’. The Dragon was delighted to welcome Penny Hewlett, Deputy CEO of AGE UK Oxfordshire, to witness this important charity event in the school pool. Penny and her assistant Rachael watched an amazing effort by all who participated. The children in the water and the staff on the side rose brilliantly to the occasion which saw the 21 miles covered in 52 minutes, breaking the previous record by two whole minutes.

The energy, enthusiasm and determination on display throughout were a delight and it is hoped these will be replicated in the efforts to persuade generous sponsors to reward the children on behalf of Age UK.
Lynams Scientists

In Science, Year 3 have been investigating shadows, spectrums and the eye. The discussions during the scientific investigations were as always thought-provoking as the children made predictions, discussed their ideas and asked “what if” questions.

The young Dragons also made pinhole cameras to help them to understand how the eye works and measured their shadows to understand how the length changes over time.
Panto Pictures
A big thank you to all staff who performed so well in last week's Panto. Here are some more pictures to view.

Romans and Dragons

Last Friday, the B Block enjoyed the annual visit from the Ermine Street Guard – a group of Roman re-enactors. The children learned all about Roman legionaries, auxiliaries and centurions, and had the chance to handle some (very authentically reproduced) Roman army equipment. All were surprised at how heavy all the armour and weapons were, and also by how organised and efficient the army was. The talk ended with some excellent questions, and then a bunbreak walk around from the legionaries, which attracted a great deal of attention from the Middle School!
Friendly Battle of the Sexes

Stuart-Clark’s boys and Dewar’s girls joined forces last week to try their hands at Pictionary. It was quite a struggle for some to keep their lips tightly ‘zipped’ and to rely on their artistic skills only to reveal the answers. Much enjoyment was had by all in discovering that team work was the answer and getting to know another House for the evening.
School House Bakers

On Sunday the B Block boarders in School House decided to turn their hand to some in-house baking and decorating. The boys were very pleased with their results and the treats were enjoyed by all at teatime after some serious revision sessions.
School House Pool Champ

This picture shows Ewan Evans, the inaugural winner of the 'School House Pool Cup'. Well done Ewan.
