 Dragon Eco Conference |
From the Headmaster
Half term is upon us already. My heartfelt thanks go to all the children, staff and parents who have done so much to help get the school year off to a flying start. Thank you to those who came to my talks on the Dragon Future – I hope you found it informative and helpful.
Please take time to read through the Half Term Notices, when they arrive in your inbox, as they do contain some essential information for all parents. In particular, please read carefully the notices regarding fireworks and the road crossing.
Could I please raise one matter concerning Halloween? This is always great fun for children but over the last few years, I have been made aware that some young children have been watching some very scary and inappropriate films at Halloween parties. Please do monitor what the children are watching (this is particularly important when there is a wide age range) and do consider the children of other families if you are having a Halloween party yourselves.
Wendy and I wish you and your families a very happy half term.

Dragon Web Update
Keep an eye out for our website's new look over the half term break.
Brighter Shade of Green
Last week the Dragon Eco Team hosted 110 pupils from 15 partner primary and prep schools for a day-long Eco Conference. This is the second year Green Dragons have organised this unique event where Year 6 pupils are the delegates. The children heard talks from Cool Earth about saving the rainforest, green IT and met local artist Angela Palmer, whose Ghost Forest installation is currently at Oxford’s Natural History Museum. In workshops the pupils calculated the air miles in their weekly shop, studied green energy models, and discussed practical waste and sustainability initiatives. Dragon pupils illustrated the school’s commitment to biodiversity and sustainable food production by demonstrating their beekeeping skills, with appearances from live bees and a honey tasting. Poetic Dragons
Three dragons have made the long list for the John Betjeman Young People's Poetry Competition. Congratulations to William Klemperer (A Block), Kit Angel Scott (B Block) and Sebastian Harriss (last year’s A Block). Well over 2,600 entries were received so this is an excellent achievement.
Varsity Match
Did you go to university at Oxford or Cambridge? If so the Headmaster invites you to join him at this year’s Varsity Match at Twickenham on Thursday 9 December. There will be a picnic lunch before the game and transport can be arranged from school. A limited number of tickets are available at £35.00 each so if you are interested please email

Gunga Weekend
The Gunga boys had much to look forward to for the in-school weekend including a new XBox360, a new PS3 with Move (like a Wii), Beatles Rockband and Guitar Hero. The boys also enjoyed Scottish Dancing, a game of Ultimate Frisbee (see photo), and a swimming trip to the Oasis at Swindon after which they were welcomed back to house with toasted bagels and a movie in the evening. Some of you will be tickled to know that Gunga reverberated to the soothing sounds of Jon Bon Jovi's 'Livin on a Prayer' and Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' as well as classics such as the Beatles 'Yellow Submarine'!
Pegasus Partnership
Just before a well-earned half term, seven eager Dragons accompanied by Ma Brereton and Mr Walker joined their Pegasus partners at Hill End. Mrs Jill Hudson, Head Teacher of Pegasus School led the group for two days of adventure, poetry writing and getting to know more about each other. Mad weather meant there were four seasons in one day so there was plenty of inspiration for budding poets who collaborated to compose an exciting anthology. Gypsy tracking, romping about in the fields, night time walks and lots of cakes also featured. We are very grateful to Jill and her staff for once again hosting the seven lucky Dragons.
Dragons on TV
Last June as part of our partnership with Pegasus School, some E Block (now D Block) pupils met up with their Pegasus partners to create some stories together. Our visit to Pegasus coincided with the presence of the Teachers TV cameras whose alert reporter recognised an opportunity to showcase not only some wonderful story telling but the story within the story of pupils from different schools sharing learning and collaborating with each other. Architectural Artists

On Saturday 9 October, twelve B Block art students went to visit Rycote Chapel by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Bernard Taylor. This trip was tied to the architectural topic on which the first unit of work for the B Block is based. The children made drawings inside the church for 90 minutes as they soaked up its extraordinary interior and studied the intricate wood work which can be found throughout the building. They also learned something of the history of the chapel which played host to Queen Elizabeth I as both princess and queen and to Charles I (who reputedly cut many of the gold stars, which adorn the ceiling, from French playing cards).
Sale News
The individual children’s Christmas card designs are now available to view online (apologies to those who were looking for them last week). Please visit the Dragon Sale website to access your child’s card and price information. Orders would be appreciated as soon as possible by email to

Dragon Fencers

Last Sunday, a group of Dragon Fencers competed in the County Foil Fencing Championships, in High Wycombe.
There were some fantastic individual performances with Henry Portwood receiving a Bronze medal in the U10 Boys Foil, Nathaniel Moatti matching this in the U12 competition, Alastair Cunningham bagging the silver in the same age group and Harry Vaughan Williams bettering them all by winning the U12 Gold medal. These were some of the best results achieved in the competition and the pupils deserve to be proud of their achievements.
