know if you will be attending and what time slot you would prefer.· You may wish to come to the later slot of 7.15 – 8.30 p.m. as slightly fewer parents have opted for this time.
Plays Not Spectrum
Would parents please note that the forthcoming performances of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ are actually not Spectrum events. Seats need to be reserved for these productions. As mentioned in DragonNews last week, Mr Scott is taking bookings for ‘Importance’ and reservations for ‘Fiddler’ will be taken after half term.
As these events are not under the Spectrum banner, different arrangements will apply. Regrettably it will not be possible for day children in the audience to have Boarders’ Supper. Both events are ‘B’ Suit occasions.
Sheldonian Concert
Parents should by now have received an invitation to the school concert at the Sheldonian Theatre on Tuesday 15 February at 7.00 p.m. Admission is free but will be by ticket only. If you would like to attend but have yet applied for tickets, please contact

The concert will be approximately one and a half hours long and will not finish before 8.30 p.m.· Out of respect to our musicians we would therefore like to request that children below Year 3 do not attend.

Keep up-to-date with our social impact programme, see who we are hoping to support this year and read about our recent fund-raising achievements by viewing the Social Impact area of the website.
Alcohol Talk
Following the success of the evening with parenting advisor Steve Biddulph last year, we are pleased to announce talks on alcohol by Dr Aric Sigman. Dr Sigman will present ‘The Facts about Alcohol’ on Saturday 5 February 2011; he will address all A Block children from 8.30 to 9.30 a.m. and then from 11.15 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. parents (from Reception to A Block) are welcome to hear the talk.
Dr Aric Sigman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Member of the Institute of Biology and has received the Chartered Scientist award from the Science Council. He has worked on education campaigns for teenagers with the Department of Health. In addition to his professional life, as a parent he deals with the issue of alcohol with his own four children and finds it easy to connect with young people and children on drinking.
Unlike most speakers on this subject, Dr Sigman has never had an alcohol problem himself. His approach to children and teenagers therefore does not rely on ‘you don’t want to end up like me, do you?’ tactics. Instead he is able to explain the consequences of teenage drinking, using impartial new scientific information which helps young people think and decide for themselves. For further information please visit his website: www.aricsigman.com
Parent tickets are available at £10 (non-refundable) on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost can be added to end of term bills. Please contact

Choir Boy

Congratulations go to Jake Sternberg of C Block who, following his audition at the end of last term, has been offered a place in the National Youth Boys’ Choir of Great Britain.
OD Rugby Success
Many readers may remember Hamish Atkinson who left the Dragon in 2006 to attend St. Edward’s. We are pleased to report that Hamish has been selected for the 40-man National Independent School Barbarians.
White Cotton Sheets?
The Dragon Textiles club would be grateful for any old, well washed, pure cotton plain white sheets or pillow cases. Please mark contributions for the attention of Ma Allen when dropping off at the Lodge.
New Boarders in the Hen House
New Year saw a couple of unusual boarders join Stuart Clark’s when Elliot Wilcox Routledge returned with a couple of ‘Silkie’ chickens last week. The new Dragon entrants are Icicle and Snowball – fitting names for our recent spell of winter weather – and both have settled in well. The two are pictured here with their new Matron, Natalie Schaverien, who has joined No. 14 from Sydney, Australia.

Young Ashmolean Art
The Ashmolean Museum will host Young Art Oxford's Fourth Annual exhibition of children's art in May in aid of Cancer Research UK. Last year, children from twenty-five local schools, including the Dragon and Lynams, saw their artwork selected from over 1,000 entries. Entries are now invited for this year's with the theme 'Every Picture Tells a Story". Submissions to the Art Department will be needed by 7 February and entry costs £1. For details of what to do, please visit the Notices page on the parents website or click here. |
The Importance of Booking
The A and B Blocks will present 'The Importance of Being Earnest' on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 February at 6.45 p.m. in the Lynam Hall.
Please note that the Thursday performance is a Parents’ Preview and is exclusively for the parents and family of the cast. There will also be very limited seating on the Friday as boarders will attend this performance.
You will need to reserve seats for this production by emailing

. Tickets will not be issued but seats will be reserved in your name and you will be directed to these on arrival. You should include any Dragons sitting with you in your booking. The reservation deadline is Monday 31 January, seats cannot be guaranteed after this date. All Dragon children attending this production should wear a 'B' Suit.
Young OD Social Enterprises
Last Friday, the Dragon was delighted to welcome back a group of young ODs who have already made a philanthropic impact. Whether by starting a charity, working for a social enterprise or being an active fundraiser for good causes, each had a story to tell the Spectrum audience. The ODs represented a range of organisations: Jamie Dear (OD 1997) Ox Fizz, Rick Mower (OD 1981) Aspire, Simon John (OD 1995) Roost and the Isiqalo Foundation and Ludo Bennett Jones (2004) the Christine Noble Children’s’ Foundation. They spoke of the choices they have made about what they do and the joys, benefits and challenges of their lives working in these fields since they left the Dragon. The audience also heard from Tim Conibear, founder of the Isiqalo Foundation, who talked from many miles away in South Africa about the exciting forthcoming launch of his foundation. The youthful ODs entertained and informed everyone, and it is hoped persuaded at least some in the audience to think about adding their own light to a growing constellation of Dragon Social Enterprises.
Dragon Sale: A Huge Thank You

In the early hours of Saturday 18 December as staff, young Dragons and stallholders got ready for the Sale, few guessed that the events of the morning would prove to be quite so dramatic. Four hours and ten inches of snow later, everyone knew it would be a day to remember! Extraordinary dedication, goodwill and genuine Dragon spirit were clearly demonstrated in just a few short but very snowy hours. The Committee send a huge thank you to every single person at the 2010 Dragon Christmas Charity Sale. To all the stallholders and helpers whose energy and enthusiasm made everything possible; to all the teachers, Dragons and school staff who went beyond the call of duty to help make the Sale such a success; and, of course, thank you to everyone who donated, bought and bid so generously at the Sale - these contributions will make a huge difference to the charities that the Sale supports. If you would like to help to make next year another year to remember (but maybe without the snow), please get in touch - a uniquely Dragon experience is guaranteed.
School House Has Got Talent
Last Sunday evening 23 members of School House entertained the boys and a panel of judges with their jokes, sketches, piano pieces, a fashion show, some brilliant miming, a cracker competition and poetry. This was the finale to a busy weekend of inflatable games, inter house football and cookie baking. A great time was had by all. (See main picture).
Inter House Football

Last weekend saw an exciting inter house football match take place. School House skill vs. the speed of Gunga was put to the test on the astro for a nonstop 70 minute festival of football. Yeonjoon Bae saved two tremendous goals in the last two minutes to hold the score line at a noble one all draw.
International Gunga
On Sunday Gunga celebrated its annual International Evening. It was a privilege for all to try new foods including: Root beer floats from America; Cured Pork from Hong Kong; Milk Tart, biltong, droewors (dried sausage) and koeksisters all from South Africa; salami, pate, cheeses, feuillettes and chocolates from Switzerland / France; jams, pickles, a version of pretzels and sweet bread cakes from Russia; and sweets (the stickiest ever – all 48 tasters were reduced to silence as their jaws were clamped together) and cakes from Korea. It was a great opportunity to discover facts about different cultures and to look at national costumes, flags, maps, sports equipment and artefacts.

All enjoyed a wonderful occasion that was a reminder that boarding provides a fantastic opportunity to get to know children and cultures from all over the world and to make the most of this.
