Dragons in France

From the Headmaster

I have enjoyed visiting lots of classrooms in the past few weeks and have been very impressed with the enthusiasm of the children and the quality of teaching. I enjoyed one particular exchange.

Teacher: What is the tense of ‘I am beautiful’?
Pupil: Past tense, Ma.
(Which teacher? You will never know.)

Well done to all the A Block children who have been visiting senior schools in order to undertake a wide variety of Scholarship assessments. A list of those who have so far been given an award by their senior school can be found here. Many congratulations.

With barely two weeks to go until the end of term, the pace of life inevitably quickens here at school and there is much to look forward to in the coming weeks. I would urge parents to keep a close eye on the calendar to ensure that nothing is missed. Parents may like to be reminded that tonight’s Spectrum is a talk by ex member of staff, Paul Baker, entitled 'Last Of The Borneo Rainforests' and our speaker at our Sunday Service this week is the Warden of St. Edward’s, Andrew Trotman.

Parents’ Evening

A reminder that the Parents’ Meeting for B Block takes place this Sunday, 20 March, in the Forum and the Lynam Hall (6.00 – 8.30 p.m.)  If you have not yet done so, please let This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Latin at Phil & Jim’s

A journalist from the Daily Telegraph recently accompanied Dr Norton’s Latin in the Community group when they gave one of their weekly lessons to the children at SS Philip and James’ school. There is a very complimentary piece explaining the project, and the benefits experienced by all the children, which can be viewed on the Telegraph website here.

Bridge Tables?

Do you have a spare card table you could donate to the new Dragon Bridge Club? Several are needed. The condition of the surface is not that important as cloths will be used. Dragons in France

Dragons in Versailles

Last week 30 children went to Versailles on the French exchange and immersed themselves admirably into the French way of life. The children were hosted by French families from the Ecole Lully. They performed in an impressive concert with solos, ensembles and singing in the Town Hall of Versailles on the final night of the trip. The parents and teachers of the French children commented on the confidence of the Dragons, their good manners and their sense of fun as they joined in with all that had been arranged.  The Dragon looks forward to receiving the French children in Oxford in June.

Swimming Success

The U11 girls and boys swam at the 27th Bromsgrove Invitational Swimming Relays this week and won 3 silver and 1 bronze medals for their Freestyle and Medley relays swims. This was a most impressive achievement against 25 other schools from the Midlands area.

Unique Art Exhibition

From Thursday, 17 to Thursday, 31 March, the Dragon School Gallery will host a retrospective exhibition of the works of Moyra Bannister. This is an exceptional opportunity to view Lady Bannister’s work from across her artistic career which began at the Ruskin School in Oxford. A selection of original work and some limited edition prints are being offered for sale by Lady Bannister to support the Dragon Bursary Programme. Please click here for more information.

Final Call for Fiddler Seats

The A and B Blocks will present ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ on Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Saturday 26 March at 6.45 p.m. in the Lynam Hall. The deadline for reservations is this Saturday 19 March and seats cannot be guaranteed after this time. These performances may be attended by reservation only and, although no tickets are to be issued, a booking is vital. If you would like a seat reserved for any of the nights please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your requests.

Please note that the Friday performance is not part of the Spectrum programme and seats cannot be reserved via the Spectrum link. Would parents also please note that Dragon children (not including Lynams) attending any of these performances must wear 'B' Suits.

Young Orchestra Opportunity

Parents of young musicians might like to know of an excellent summer course run by the Young National Schools Symphony Orchestra (YNSSO). Taking place from 10 to 17 July, and suitable for players of a Grade 3/4 standard and above, the course will provide children from ages 9 to 13 with an opportunity to play real orchestral repertoire. With a mixture of full orchestra, sectional and individual coaching, 'Young NSSOs' will have unrivalled support, gain confidence and enjoy playing together both on and off the concert platform. A musical and social must for anyone who loves their music.  A large number of bursaries, including some fully subsidised places, are available. Application forms and more information are available by clicking here. Auditions will be held at the Dragon on Monday 28 March. Help Sustain your Planet

Climate Week Logo

The UK’s first Climate Week will take place next week 21-27 March.  This is a week to think about how we can care for our planet and share our ideas about sustainable living.  If you are not doing so already, this is a great opportunity to take practical action and start to make a difference to your community – at school and at home.

Year 3 Rocks!

Year 3 University Museum

Before half term, Year 3 went on a trip to University Museum in Oxford to discover how exciting the study of rocks really can be.  They explored meteorites, minerals and the everyday uses of rocks. They now know that toothpaste, washing powder, non-stick pans and pencils are all made from rocks.  With the help of Crunchie and Mars bars, they savoured the differences between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.  As they scoured the museum for answers to the rock trail quiz, no stone was left unturned.

Dramatic Goblin

In an excellent production of drama and singing, Year 1 introduced their parents to the ‘Goblin Next Door’ on Tuesday this week. The goblin used impressive acting skills to persuade the audience that he was extremely mean. Gentle fairies were enjoying a party when disaster struck but happily the woodland animals, in their fantastic costumes, encouraged the goblin back on to the right track. Lord and Lady Woodpigeon handled their roles with maturity beyond their 5 or 6 years in their ‘appearances’ from inside the tree. The orchestral accompaniment was charming and, as always, the singing by all was extremely enthusiastic.
