The Summer Fayre
From the Headmaster
I would like to offer my sincere and warm congratulations to all the Common Entrance candidates for passing into their senior schools. This year’s A Block leave the Dragon to a spread of 34 schools and fully deserve their successes. My thanks also goes to the teachers who have – over the years – given them such great support and excellent teaching.
Attached to the e-mail which sent this copy of DragonNews are some instructions regarding Prize Giving on 25 June. Please read these carefully in order to avoid disappointment. A copy can be found here.
I hope the children enjoy the Exeat and use the time to relax and rest before the busy final few weeks of term.

Governors’ Challenge
A record breaking performance by B Block entrepreneurs. This year the Governors’ Challenge has raised £8,330.55 smashing all previous records. The sum reflects a huge variety of ingenious entrepreneurial projects and industry and will be a very hard figure to match for future Challenges.
This year twenty eight pupils were nominated by their forms to participate in the Philanthropy Phase of the Challenge each representing a charity they believe should receive a share of the funds raised. These pupils pitched their persuasive presentations to each other and 16 charities will shortly be receiving a cheque and a letter from the successful pupils.

Impressive Instrumentalists

Children in Year 3 performed an instrumental concert last Tuesday, filled with extraordinary musical talent and ability. The concert included a remarkable variety of solos and duets on piano, violin, cello, guitar, recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, cornet and percussion. They played a selection of pieces in their music club groups including The Streets of Laredo (guitar group), Frere Jacque in canon (wind and brass group), and Octave March and Red Parrott, Green Parrott (string group). The concert concluded with two contrasting pieces: Heatwave, a laid back jazz piece and an arrangement of The Trout, one of Schubert’s most famous compositions.

The Summer Fayre
The annual Summer Fayre this year raised nearly £500 for the Mental Health Charity, MIND. All the ten boarding houses took part and as ever some old favourites were wheeled out. The return of the Hair Salon from Gunga Din, Welly Winging from Nicholson's, find the treasure from Dewar's, the Wacky Races from Cherwell, sack races from Startin's, Gou Gou Gambling from Strads and make your own biscuits from Stuart-Clark's are all guaranteed to bring in the 20p’s. This year however new offerings helped to bolsters the amount raised namely Splat the Rat from Stringer's and the School House Bakery. Thanks to all for their enthusiasm. (See main photo)
English Schools National Primary Swimming Finals Sheffield
The U11 Boys and Girls swimming teams are competing in Sheffield tomorrow in the ESSA national Finals. Good luck to the team and we look forward to hearing their results in next week's edition.
Exploring Ecology

Year 1 children visited the Living Rainforest, south of Oxford, last Friday as part of their Geography curriculum. They were delighted to see such rare, shy creatures as the chameleon and python. Children found out about appetising things to eat on an ‘edible rainforest’ tour and saw coffee plants and banana palms growing in their natural habitats. The visit enhanced their understanding of the unique biodiversity of rainforests and the need to protect them for people, plants and animals.
Flying Visit

On Wednesday, a Captain and a Cabin Crew Director for British Airways visited Reception and gave an inspiring talk that included demonstrations, videos and photographs. The children watched footage of a plane taking off and landing from within the cockpit. They learnt how the cabin crew are trained to deal with medical and fire emergencies and the lucky teachers were able to take part in a mock safety demonstration!
