Smiling with Success

Success at Top Schools

Congratulations go to the girls who have successfully passed their 13+ entrance examinations to the following schools: Cheltenham Ladies College, Headington, Oxford High School, St Mary's School Ascot, St Swithun’s, Wychwood, Wells Cathedral School and Wycombe Abbey. (See main picture). This is a busy time for this year's A Block and we wish good luck to all those still to sit their exams.

Choir on TV

BBC Songs of Praise

The Dragon School Chamber Choir are runners up in the BBC Songs of Praise Choir of the Year Competition. One of 132 junior choirs in this national competition, the choir sang beautifully, fully deserving their success on the day. Both the semi-finals and finals were recorded last Saturday in Sheffield for broadcast on Sunday, 27 March and Sunday, 10 April on BBC 1. Look out for the Songs of Praise timeslot in TV listings.

Cleaning Dragons

Dragons Clean Up

For the third year running, a group of C Block Dragon pupils took part in the OxClean 2011 community event to clean up Oxford.  The Dragons focused their efforts along Bardwell Road and managed, in a short space of time, to collect a surprising amount of litter.

The Northern Gateway

Parents may be aware that there are plans to build a 100-acre Business and Retail Park in between the Wolvercote roundabout and the Pear Tree interchange. Parents who are interested in the plans or concerned about the implications for traffic levels and travel times, may like to visit the Oxford City Council website (information can be found through a search for Northern Gateway) at: http://www.oxford.gov.uk/ and the Engage-Oxford web site at: http://www.engage-oxford.org.uk/

Unique Art Exhibition

Moyra Bannister Art

From Thursday, 17 to Thursday, 31 March, the Dragon School Gallery will host a retrospective exhibition of the works of Moyra Bannister. This is an exceptional opportunity to view Lady Bannister’s work from across her artistic career which began at the Ruskin School in Oxford. A selection of original work and some limited edition prints are being offered for sale by Lady Bannister to support the Dragon Bursary Programme. For more information please click here.

Incredible Running

Malvern Runners

A group of Dragons ventured to Malvern College last Sunday for the annual National Cross Country Championships. With signs that spring was finally on its way, an arduous course was made more pleasant by clear skies and the stunning countryside that surrounds the college. The Dragons were in high spirits and everyone ran incredibly well: the U11 boys’ team just missed out on a top three finish, and there were notable individual performances.

Run of the Year

E Block Charity Event

On Friday, 4 March, E block attempted to run the distance between the Dragon and the homes of the Olympic mascots (three hundred and seventy seven kilometres). It was a stunning, cloudless day and runners were spurred on by rousing music and icy water. Stooges, teachers and even some parents joined in and their laughter could apparently be heard a mile away! Thanks go to all generous sponsors for a brilliant day, the proceeds of which will go to Leonard Cheshire Disability.

From Asterix to Zidane

Lynams French Morning

Lynams celebrated French in style with an exciting French morning filled with gastronomic delights and boule. Children came to school dressed in French style clothes, as a famous French person, a piece of French food or drink, or as a person in French regional dress.  At the school entrance (festooned with red, white and blue bunting), accordion music played as children explained who or what they were. D’Artagnan; a croissant; the driver of a very realistic Eurostar; Asterix and TinTin; Aramis, a musketeer - and Zidane the captain of the victorious football team. To read more please click here.

Dragons have Wings

DN_issue_4.21_-_Lynams_Book_Week

During Lynams Library Week, children heard about the work of an illustrator and author, Gillian Johnson, in assembly. She spoke of her work and particular love of watercolour illustrations drawn in ink with a steel pen. She showed the children copies of her books and sketches of the many characters she has created. She has drawn some delightful pictures of dragons for Lynams and these will be seen hanging in the school in the coming weeks. Gillian set the children a challenge of drawing and painting a picture of a monster in watercolours. The general message of the assembly was that dragons have wings, so they should always fly high and not be afraid to try and develop their talents.
